Clinical Nutrition Appointments: Scope of Practice

Clinical Nutrition Appointments are individualized nutrition services provided in collaboration with your healthcare team. They are not a substitute for medical diagnosis or medical treatment.

What is Provided During Clinical Nutrition Appointments?

Depending on your specific diagnoses and nutrition needs, Clinical Nutrition Appointments may include:

  • Review of nutrition concerns, symptoms, and updating of initial goals (set during the Initial Consultation)
  • Comprehensive clinical assessment
  • Development or modification of a clinical Meal Plan
  • Nutrition education
  • Development or adjustment of nutrition strategies
  • Practical recommendations tailored to the individual’s clinical situation.

How to Get Started?

The first step is to book an Initial Consultation to discuss your needs, symptoms, and diagnoses (confirmed and suspected/pending). Your intake information will be reviewed to determine whether your needs fall within my scope of practice and whether I am the appropriate provider to support your care. Where needed, I may recommend alternative or additional clinical support.

How Much Do These Services Cost?

Clinical Nutrition Appointments will be provided on a per-appointment basis.

Clinical Nutrition Appointment (50 minutes): $150 (GST exempt), standard clinical rate for clients requiring individualized clinical nutrition care beyond package options.

Complex Clinical Nutrition Appointment (50 minutes): $170 (GST exempt), for complex cases requiring advanced clinical experience (therapeutic ketogenic diets, dietary support for MCAS, hEDS & POTS) and for clinical services requiring additional assessment, specialized planning, increased preparation, or more intensive clinical decision-making.

NOTE: A series of agreed-upon services may be provided as defined by a Customized Nutrition Package.

Questions and Answers

Q: Are Clinical Nutrition Appointments the same as an Initial Consultation?

A: No. The Initial Consultation is a non-clinical appointment to discuss your goals, symptoms, diagnoses, and service options. Clinical Nutrition Appointments involve individualized clinical nutrition assessment and care after your needs have been reviewed.

Q: Why is an Initial Consultation required for hEDS, MCAS, and POTS services?

A: Approximately 60% of individuals with these conditions are diagnosed with more than one of them. Because the symptoms of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) are different for each individual, there is no set package. An Initial Consultation enables us to meet to discuss your specific symptoms and prioritize your digestive or systemic triggers.

Q: What is the dietary strategy for managing overlapping hEDS, MCAS, and POTS symptoms?

A: Managing the complex “trifecta” of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome requires an individualized approach. Rather than relying on overly restrictive meal elimination sheets, which can cause difficulty with nutritional adequacy, I use a step-by-step approach to build a diet that targets connective tissue health, stabilizes mast cell triggers, and optimizes blood volume and electrolytes.
